This Ballast adhesive thread is very interesting. I have 2 unresolved concerns with ballasting track: (a) noise transmission to the benchwork, even through homosote or homabed subgrade, and (b) the impact or damage experienced when removing Flex track to make layout changes.
I experimented with white glue on last layout, and only because the SHS flex track was very rugged was I able to salvage it for reuse. the Elmers White Glue stuck everything hard in place. I had to use box cutters and putty knives to pry it loose from the roadbed, and then had to scrape the ballast from the ties. The homabed was scrapped immediately. I also noticed that the white glue carried the noise from the rail to the bench work. So please keep experimenting and pass on the results. White glue can leave shinny spots. It remains water soluble, which can be a pro or a con, depending. Matte medium is dull, but some less expensive brands can leave a white residue. It is not water soluble once set, which may be good but makes it harder to salvage ready-made track if you change the track plan/dismantle a layout. I have heard about using acrylic flat base from the paint store as a matte medium substitute, and now Future. I have not tried either. If they are effective and cost competitive, there is no reason not to try them. Pieter E.
