I would not shy away from Shinohara #6 turnouts for what you are planning to 
operate. I have a 28'x34' layout and all but two of my 70 plus turnouts are #6. 
Those other two are #8's. I run, among other
loco's, AM 4-8-4 Northern, Southwinds Cab forward and River Raisin
SD-7/9's. Have not had any trouble running these or other stuff through the #6 
turnouts. I agree, the #8's look great but, do eat up to much real estate. In 
fact most people who see the layout don't even realise the turnouts are #6's !
