All true.

My daughter, Julia, liked to put my old Flyer around the tree at Christmas. I
was in HO at the time and had designed a layout around the Owen Sound -> Park
Head -> Wiarton, Ontarion operations including actual timetabling. For
Christmas 2000, I thought I would give her a gag gift of a Flyer car painted
pink with her name on it.

I went to George's Trains in Toronto to find a cheap Flyer car to do this to.
There were no cheap Flyer cars. They all had collector prices on them. But
what they did have were a number of Mainline, Quality Craft and Kinsman S scale
kits at lower than HO resin kit prices. Julia liked to build things, so I
decided to get the Kinsman Heintz reefer kit so we could build it together.
When I asked about Flyer trucks, they told me to check the Internet which I did
and stumbled onto Craig O'Connell's excellent S scale website. S Scale Loco &
Supply was listed under parts. There were no Flyer trucks but an ad for a CNR
E-10-a Mogul kit with some test shot photos. I had just completed rebuilding
an HO version of 86 from a VAN Hobbies generic import and was quite impressed
with what I saw.

I figured out that if I could get one of these kits, that I would not have to
change my track plan as the minimum radius was 36". When I discovered 8 rung
ladders and PRS cars lettered for CNR in two different leafs and the mighty
CPR, that was it. Bye, bye HO scale. This was, for the most part, all
discovered and purchased on the Internet.

Since then, I have been very happy to be in S scale. I even got to meet Jamie
Bothwell, Jeff English and Earl Tuson at my first Convention in 2001. Beauty,
eh?

It's a wonderful kit and I would recommend it to anyone. I have almost
finished building 86. Sometimes they come up through the grape vine so keep
your ear posted. Originally they were terribly underpriced at $599 USD. At
the time though, the CDN dollar was only 50% of the US dollar so we had to pay
over $1000 per kit once taxes and bank fees were included. If you find one in
Canada, that is what you will probably have to pay.

There will be another great kit coming from SSL&S in the near future, a CNR H-6
class ten wheeler. You may want to get in on that one.

cheers,

Andy Malette
