I don't recall exactly what year, but I did cover Frank's layout for
Model Railroader Magazine. At the time I would set up the shot then
shoot a Polaroid to make sure everything was a near to perfect as
possible. Finally, I would shoot 'real' film.
The Polaroid pack held either 8 or 10 shots and typically I would go
through at two packs per layout. The pack itself was expertly designed
to hold the film precisely, flat and be jam proof, while being
disposable. Not for Frank, he grabbed the pack disassembled it and
named off a couple of uses for the pieces.
If one checks on the video of his layout in the Tracks Ahead feature of
the layout you'll see more. Check out a closeup of the RR owner's
mansion (Frank had a name for the guy). In the front, there is a
fountain that is made from a jar lid. I think it came from Elf Brand's
pickled herring, because the grooves in the lid were so familiar to me.
