Back when I was shooting for SHS's catalogues and ad's Don had sent me a
box of flex track to use. After that I recycled a chunk or two unto my
layout. It blended quite well with my original Miller tie strip with
#126 rail. I noticed just a little difference in rail sizes. In my
case a couple of swipes of a file to lower the SHS rail to match the 126
did the trick.
I will agree with Don and say the track is probably the easiest I've
ever worked with. This is mainly due to the center strip that holds the
ties, while others use two strips. I think if they had made up similar
track with #100 I would have been tempted to tear up all my old stuff.
Some months ago there was a fairly long discussion on a Milwaukee Road
Yahoo list about trackage on the mainline across the mountains. Over
the years as new ballast was added the crews would raise the track out
of the mud as well as, relaying certain areas with heavier rail. The
problem with that was the many tunnels that had to be dealt with. Over
the years as freight cars became taller the tendency was to lower the
tunnel floor rather than chipping away at the top (a big cost factor).
In the case of the Milwaukee you also had to deal with the overhead
trolley wire. So now you had two opposing factors coming into play.
The mainline had become a rodeo ride! Now at the same time much heavier
top-heavy grain cars, longer trains and mid-train helper engines (with
slack action) were all being introduced. The results were predictable!
Luckily we only deal with numbers like .005 in rail height!
