Folks....
It might be interesting to list all the pros and cons of each design approach.
Why, for instance, are there supporters and haters of each? Beats me!
One advantage of the one-motor approach is that DCC decoders with BEMF will
provide a smoother slower speed when compared to two motors being driven by one
decoder. BEMF simply works better with one motor per decoder when compared to
two motors per decoder. Laws of physics and all that.....
Another advantage is that a LARGE motor normally will have more power at lower
rpms than a small motor -- all other factors being equal. Small motors
sometimes run quite fast at their slowest speed. Thus, hauling a long slow
coal drag uphill can theoretically be done more smoothly at really slow speeds
with a one-large-motor design when compared to two small motors. Although, in
O "gauge" even a small motor could be rather sizeable.
Any other pros/cons out there?
If you are going to ask Lionel to change their design concepts, it would be
best to have some good reasons upon which to base the request. Maybe two
smaller motors are simply cheaper and nothing will change their minds.
Since today is Monday and normal business hours are behind us, I was wondering
if anyone who wrote a Lionel gripe message actually called them up to discuss
things. Let's have a show of hands.......
