Hi Ed, I answered this last night but apparently it got lost so I'll try
again.
The advantages of the twin motor drive are basically three. First it clears
out the center of the loco for the huge toy train type sound and control parts,
which are much larger than DCC /soundtraxx.Second they are more reliable in a
toy train environment as they use a simplified gear design with rigid trucks
and have no driveshafts or u-joints.and Third the toy train types hear the
words "twin motors" and think they are getting more for their money. They don't
realize that 2 crappy small motors can cost less than one good big motor. It's
possible to make a twin motor drive that is geared correctly for scale use and
high quality but that's not what the toy train drives are all about.
The dis-advantages are these. High speed gearing making scale speed operation
harder than it needs to be,and no easy way to change gear ratios. Rigid trucks
with no wheel equalization and exposed gears . The front motor sticks up into
the cab area so no interior detailing possible. Two small motors to try and
sync instead of one large motor which sync's its self. Usually they make you
pay for their proprietary control/sound system which you then have to remove
and replace with a normal type.and some others that I forget :>) ....DaveBranum
