Here's another consideration. With one motor powering all wheels there is less
likelihood of loss of adhesion. I think I read somewhere that French
locomotives have only one motor per truck powering all the axles via drive
shafts & gears, and that prevents an individual axle from losing adhesion and
spinning without producing any tractive effort. We accomplish this with
sophisticated computer-controlled wheel speed monitoring.
By the way, I saw a pre-production sample of Lionel's U33C in St Louis this
past weekend. There is no point in complaining about the swinging pilot.
that's the way it's going to be, and scale modellers should be able to easily
fix it.
