On the contrary... the availability of such new products as the new Sergent coupler (and other scale oriented items) could very well be the very thing that keeps S alive in the future by drawing in others from other scales. SURELY it is not the presence of AF that now draws in new modelers... and neither will it be in the future.
Modelers in HO are not faithful to it because they can still get TYCO and AHM toy trains. Neither do new modelers go into HO because they can still get them. AVAILABILITY is the key here! And whether it be the availability of scale products or toy products, either way... if the products are not available, then supporters will not come... and why should they? And as for the S market being large enough to justify Sergent's investment... keep in mind that an S soupler is not just an S coupler... it is also an Sn3 and Sn30 coupler... and maybe more. And I know for sure that there are a number of Sn3 and Sn30 modelers interested in a new Sergent S coupler as I have already been contacted by a number of them... and they have also already contacted Sergent about the new S coupler voiving their interest. And since, as you say, S scale's current supporter base will be dieing off in the next 20 years, then something must be done NOW to try and prevent S from fading into oblivion. I could use about 100 couplers myself, but I couldn't in good faith recommend that he make any heavy investment in an S coupler.
