Everyone,

We've hashed this out on this list before, and I've expressed my views.
Jeff and I have had a few conversations about this also. I've also had
the wrath of one BOT member come down on me, so I won't say too much.
But since I've retired from my responsibilities with the NASG, I will
add a few words.

Either we join the model railroad community or we don't. If we join we
are actually three segments, sometimes with only a thin thread between
us. These three segments might require different approaches or simply
ignore one or more segments--but with our size organization we really
can't cover all three. If we join the community we would obviously
compete with N, HO, O, G & and their variations for 'shelf' space. If
we go our separate way (Dispatch or S Gaugian) there is no competition
but we could also go the way of Beta video cameras rather quickly. I
don't think we have a Steve Jobs to come back out of retirement and put
us on top!

I did a quick study of the publications some months ago. The coverage
of Model Railroader is much greater than another other publication by a
long ways, although their readership has declined like the rest of the
magazines. So if the purpose is to blanket our hobby with our
message--there is only one choice. The middle of the road is likely to
be the on-line Model Railroad Hobbist. I don't know if they're 'making
it' yet because magazines tend to loose money for several years. They
are so the most economical and most hungry for meaty stuff. However. if
your doing it by chipping away at the other scales, then any publication
including historical, NMRA regional publications and even local clubs
are worth looking at.

One can never know if any effort or $$ invested will pay off until
sometimes years afterward. One thing is pretty much guaranteed,
however--doing nothing is setting a course to oblivion
