For someone like me who doesn't socialize, the great motivator to change has
been ebay.  I had a lifetime of HO stuff and really wanted a change.  I dabbled
in On2 and O standard gauge for 20 years, but never made the untimate
commitment.  One day I discovered ebay.  Now keep in mind I'm not particularly
well off.  I've never owned lots of expensive locomotives or anything else, but
I am a modeler, and a pretty good one after all the years of practice I've
had.  When I started selling off my HO stuff, I didn't need to worry about not
getting my investment back, it was more that I wanted to get something for all
the work I had put in.  I listed things at very low prices to start the ball
rolling and because I thought it would be fun to give someone a bargain, and
they began to sell, and I mean SELL!  Before I knew it, I was listing, packing,
shipping, and selling more.  Some of the prices I was getting were ridiculous.
I still remember an HO
hearse I sold to a guy from Brazil for $60 that I paid $3 for.

The reason I'm writing this is to say that "I have too much invested in HO"
simply translates into, "well then it won't cost you anything to switch to S,
just transfer one asset into another!  When I realized O wasn't going to work
for me, Guess what?  all those assets went through ebay and were invested in
S.  I know some folks have very expensive tastes.  But it's a whole lot easier
to sell a $10 item for $30, than it is to sell a $1500 item for $1200,
especially if you're affraid you'll get cheated.  This wasn't a well thought
out financial plan, its pure serendipity.
