Hi Pieter and Jace ---

I have had some fun with AF tank cars over the years. I turn the underframe
into a flat car or use it under some house car. The tank represents an
insulated car, and the overhang beyond the bolsters was stretched by AF to
accommodate the over sized wheels / trucks. I take about 1/4” out of that
part of the tank and I get acceptable results. I was able to get several
sets of tank car chassis from Larry Jackman when he first brought out the SSA
tank cars, and I put them under the modified AF tanks. As always, I got about
3/4 way through these and put them into service still lacking all the
grabirons, placards and handrails. “S”omeday I will finish them! One tank
got a Lionel O-27 dome (with new details) and that is my favorite. S has not
produced any of the BIG dome cars that you see in WWII era photos. I will
stick an early photo of the big dome tank in my SLE&P photo album – it is now
all but ready for paint as handrails and grabs are installed along with dome
running boards.

I don’t know if Ron S. has extra parts for his SSA tank cars, but if he does
they are a quick, neat way to get reasonable running gear.

Have fun!

As Jace says, the AF tank car with the Ace conversion has a few issues of
proportion. I have some intentions of converting AF tanks into UTLX cars but
haven't actually done one yet, and the process is likely to be somewhat
involved.
