Although this isn't AF list, I'm somewhat glad to hear the original
chassis was a bit long, because it made my SSA tanks look a little
scrunched! I have my original (Gulf) tank car on the layout less it's
chassis and being used for liquid storage.
Am I correct in saying that there were at least 3 variations on the tank
car, which might account for some problems with the ACE bolster? The
one I have now had the metal chassis with K brake system. Later I
owned, for a short while, a later version with plastic chassis and
fairly decent AB brake system, followed by the really basic Pikemaster
version, which I think is still made.
Our club's modular layout has a truck-less Shell tank car that we put
down on the layout that not long ago caused one viewer to get somewhat
irritated. A past member had spilled a bottle of India ink on the
layout near the throat of our main yard. To provide an excuse for the
ink spill he bought the junker tank car and laid it down near the
spill--as a oil tanker spill. Hey, it happens all the time, doesn't
it! That has been maybe 20 years and maybe 100 displays ago. Recently
one gentlemen, who just might have worked for Shell, called a couple of
us over to question us about our motives regarding that tank car. He
left with a rather irritated look on his face. I thought, we might get
a letter from their legal department asking us to "cease and desist"
showing the car.
I understand a tank car accident happened on the branch line that served
my home town. The daily local lost the last 4-5 cars--all but one was a
tank car. One was damaged to the point that it was leaking. I was told
the railroad tried to sell the leaking product (probably asphalt) to
anybody who could bring barrels to hold the stuff! Times have changed!
