I also should note that I have spliced a couple of Flyer gons, cutting the height of the sides to make a USRA mill gon model (it should have different ends, and the model is 4 feet too long but has the right number of ribs and panels).
I also cut one shorter and lowered to only three ribs on the send for an old 36ft steel car owned used by CNJ. In nearly all cases I replaced the molded on grab irons with wire, built up the end sill, added new steps and brake gear, etc. Your mileage may vary. I have one 50 ft gon spliced from 2 Flyer PRR car that I didn't even re-letter, the lettering was spaced such that it looked OK after the splice (if you ignore the dimensional data saying it's a 40' car). I didn't add much detail, just to see if anyone notices. Pieter E.
