Eric Lunberg had a MR article a couple decades ago about using a Atlas 9" 
turntable under a false bottom that turns.  Think he used film cannisters to 
raise the bridge height and laid the Atlas turntable on plywood.  This means 
building your own bridge to any length you want.  The turning isn't 
prototypical, but Eric reported it was very reliable.  I think he built his 
bridge out of wood with Atlas bridge girders glued on the side.  Sorta like 
converting a AF freight car to scale, I suppose.
