Earl,

Your supposition on designations is correct. Modern modelers use a convention
that gives scale first (N, HO, S, G), followed by a letter designation (n for
narrow, w for wide) followed by a size which designates gauge (2 = 2', 3 = 3',
6 = 6'(usually in feet but occasionally in inches)) with a few vairants thrown
in. For example HOm is HO scale meter gauge. But generally, in our case, Sn18
is 1/64 18" gauge, Sn2 is 2' gauge, Sn3 is 3' gauge, Sn42 is 3'6" gauge
(commonly using HO track!), Sw5 would be 5' gauge, and Sw6 would be 6' gauge.
Those modeling in Sn2 can often use N scale mechanisms. Whether or not they
use N standards is a question, as it is "close" but not exact for 2' in S
scale. Perhaps "close enough". You would need to ask someone who models in
Sn2....

I won't get into Proto: scales here, but generally the Proto: designation
merely indicates the scale used and that it is to those standards. Suffice it
to say that someone modeling in Proto:64n3 is not using the same standards as
someone in Sn3.

Hopefully this is not TMI
