Dave, One of those link I gave you (Elvas Yower) is from a group that is doing virtual modeling. They have actually created a pole road layout program with the locos and cars. You can check out the thread here:

Apparently the three images on Rick's page (above) are directly downloadable from that page too. I don't think you want to make 3D Print cars and engines, but various components like wheels and "engine" could be 3D'd to make the modeling process easier. Just a thought...
