One idea to investigate is the reverse trip pin HO coupler from Walthers.  The 
curved "glad hand" is positioned facing toward the car rather than outward from 
the car.  Still works with the magnets and couples up normally.  Using this 
coupler when coupling up to a diesel or steam engine pilot is the intended 
purpose of the reverse trip pin.  Worth a looksee.  Ed L.
