  Hi Rachael, Welcome to the group, S is a nice size to work with, I've modeled 
in most sizes and S is my favorite. Do you have a specific idea for modeling in 
S scale? The era, type of operations, size of layout ,etc. will all determine 
whether DC or DCC is the best approach. Some locos come with DCC option and 
some can be easily converted and some are more difficult. If we knew more about 
what you'd like to model we can probably offer more specific info. Regards,
