A-ha!  A true peer!  I'd say it's about 50-50 of which to purchase. 

1.  Go for the AC locomotive.  Wheel style is dependent upon your interest, 
though you seem to be more scale oriented.  American Models will probably sell 
you an AC/scale locomotive though it's an unusual combination.  You will have 
to call them and get past the brusque exterior of Mr. Bashista.  He'll sell you 
what you want if you hang in there.  SHS has all flavors in one except for 
their steam engines.

2.  Go for the DC locomotive if you don't want to be tethered to the arcane 
direction changing cycle of AC powered locomotives and you suspect you will 
install DCC.
