OK boys.  Tuck in your shirts and best behavior!

HI Rachel.  Welcome aboard.  It will be good to have a woman on this list.
Given the large crafting component that goes into any scenicked model railroad,
I'm frankly surprised more women aren't attracted to this hobby.  Maybe some
male attitudes, or the upfront challenges of bench work, track work, and wiring
are seen as too much of an impediment.

I recently befriended a couple in my area who are buiding an ambitious HO scale
layout together.  He is handling the engineering aspect of the build, while she
has already built a large number of exquisite structures and is teaching
herself how to do scenery.

That's not to suggest women aren't capable of all aspects of the hobby.  Mary
Miller is the NMRA's first Master Model Railroader (MMR).  Others are
electrical engineer Leslie Eaton, along with Mary Barstow, June Maier, and Gale
Allen Komar.  Linda Sand is a layout designer of some repute, and if you start
looking around, you'll find other women in the hobby as well.

One of my pleasures in taking our S scale display layout on the road is the
interest shown by women.  They invariably ask the more interesting and
thoughtful questions.

Good luck

Jim Martin
