Tom, In agreement. We have talked at length over the phone about a couple
of prototype choices for these cars....with a bit of work of course!
If I can get busy on a couple of started projects, I have two AM
conversions, one is for a DL&W express boxcar with Allied Full Cushion trucks.
This one needs the end's topmost rectangular wide rib ground off and replaced
with a very narrow rib from Evergreen round styrene, may not be perfect but a
reasonably close stand in. Also the ladders need to be changed to 8 rung. Upper
and lower door tracks need to be replaced with thinner strips. I put River
Raisin AFC trucks under it and need to add the DesPlaines 8 rung ladders yet.
Underbody changes involve the usual movement of the erroneous brake parts and
the addition of steam trainline and end connections from BTS.
The other is not really the "boxcar" but uses the AM plug door car, sides
only. It will be an ERDX insulated boxcar. The sides I cut out of the AM car,
the roof is PRS rectangular panel, the ends are resin 5/5 from Std Railway
Castings with the welded joint sanded off and replaced with rivets. This is
where the Archer rivets come into play. The AM plug door sides are welded, the
ERDX sides are riveted. That welded seam on the ends is now a simple
replacement of Archer rivets on a 0.005" styrene strip. Underbody will be a
floor I received built up from the late Stan Furmanek. Biggest holdup with both
of these cars is layout construction ongoing.
