If the goal is flawless operation, then why settle for anything less? Genuine
flawless operation will not be achieved if problems are accepted as "normal" or
"unavoidable" or "realistic", etc.
A typical op session in the world of model railroading lasts maybe five or six
hours. For that short time period, having no derailments or accidental
uncouplings or other mechanical problems is a reasonable and achievable goal.
It has been accomplished by folks in HO. I do not know of anyone claiming to
have accomplished it in S, but there might be some out there in S-land.
If you do not aspire to flawless operation, that is fine. We all do what we
want in the hobby. No problem with that. If you do aspire to flawless
operation, you will soon find it is not easy to attain and represents quite a
challenge -- particularly on a large complex layout. But conquering the
challenge is where all the fun is at.
Let's not water down the goal just because it is difficult to achieve. Takes
all the fun out of it.
