Rachel,
I'm no DCC expert, most of what I've learned is by good old trial and error,
plus peeking in the manuals...
But here goes.
I see the NCE Powercab has a 2 amp capacity, that might be a little shy for S.
I would recommend looking for a system with at least a 5 amp supply. My MRC
Prodigy system has a 3.5 amp supply and with will hande a pair of SHS F units
with Lenz decoders OK.
I seldom run more than two locomotives at a time, anyway. I did buy an 8 amp
booster, well, mainly because it was available at a good price and there's a
little Tim Allen(More power! Grunt, grunt..) in me.
Each locomotive with a motor in an A-B-A configuration would need it's own
decoder. Two or three locomotives of the same manufacturer with the same make
decoder will pretty much run together well at the same speed. You just have to
be sure all decoders are the same address or set the locomotives up in a
consist (which is something I can't easily explain, maybe someone else here
can.) My SHS F unit A-B pairs have the same address assigned for each unit in
the pair.
Once Lionel gets their DCC compatibility working, you should be able to run it
with any DCC system. But right now, out of the box, Lionel needs their
TMCC/Legacy system or conventional AC to run them, unless the locomotive's
electronics are replaced.
MTH's locomotives will run with any DCC system or their DCS system.
Hope this answers some of your questions.
