Rachel, I don't know minimum, but I use the MRC Prodigy Advance 2 sytem with 3.5 amps. I've run a 2-8-0, a F-3 A+A set and a NW-2 all four powered and all with sound at the same time with no problem. All were SHS locos, but I"ve run a American Models RS-3, the 2-8-0 and the NW-2, again with sound and no lack of power. I don't run long trains, typically 9 to 10 cars and caboose, but I've pulled 30 cars with the F-3's with no problem, up a 2.6% grade. I've ran no lighted cars so can't speak there.
