Bill: Great work - as usual! Some years ago I found a 1923 edition of "Locomotive Catechism". It has been invaluable in identifying and placing locomotive details and actually understanding their function. It is way over my head on information (data from a PRR test of a K4s with a Schmidt superheater... huh?!!) but has drawings of parts and tons of Q&A on operation. Helped me figure out a part on the smoke box of one of my locomotives - the superheater damper in the closed position.
My experience is train shows are pretty useless for "real" information, check out library sales of old books or antique stores in railroad towns. When Penny wants to stop at an antique shop while we're traveling, I always agree and head straight for their old books... Found a brand new 1956 NYC Rules book that way. Both sit proudly in the library next to my dad's 1937 "Machinery Handbook". Enjoy the journey...
