Hi Bill --

The three shells I started with had the F-3 dynamic brake slots in the
forward part of the roof, but they also had the later model horizontal
grills. I think the F-5 did not have the dynamic brake slots, but had the
fan like the F-7s. Attached is an old photo of the F-3b as I remade it
from a Wabash Valley shell, still lacking final detailing and paint after
nearly 25 years of service, but it has the original dynamic brake slots with
screens. Its mates became F-7s, and all three got the same "swiss cheese"
treatment with new fans, grills, and appropriate details behind the grills
(they are all different -- a fun research project!).

Have fun!

Enhorning claimed it was a F-7, though he first said it was going to be a
F-3. Ads in “Model Railroader” magazine had this:

“EMD F-3 A-Unit Loco Available Soon” (April, 1950), and

“EMD F-7 A unit, ready to run, $37.50, EMD F-7 B unit, ready to run, $35.00”
(October, 1950).
