Imagine that, Bill Lane and myself thinking alike!<G>
I would like to add just a bit to my thoughts. After a product is
released and is deemed to be fairly profitable. Then some additional
R&D should be put into that product. For years many of us have replaced
all those sheet metal floors on the AF house cars--I would have thought
by now Lionel could now introduce a nicely detailed plastic floor with a
few pennies of their profit.
Likewise, and I've bitched about this many times, the American Models
house car underbody being backward. Maybe a few dollars invested in
making it correct would generate many new sales and make a great
retrofit for the old ones. A few rivets here and there plus some better
appliances wouldn't hurt either. But the point that I'm trying to make
is--a profit needs to be make, but a 'good but dated' product can be
up-graded for more profits!
If Bill, Rusty or some of the other micro-manufacturers ever show enough
profit it might be a miracle--but miracles do happen! The local hobby
shop has sold a few of my trees, a fellow in a nearby town has also
purchased some, so maybe I'll see a few dollars in profit!

Like most here I am a firm believer in getting it "correct". But none
of the air brakes actually work on any of my cars, or yours either, so
after that they are ALL wrong, and are just models at that point.
Bob W beat me to posting some of my thoughts about research and
knowing when to say "when".
Thank You,
