Few of us know all the details of the brake rigging of all rail cars, but there
are a few ways to spot gross violations of brake rigging principles. One
should know the difference between pipes that carry air pressure and rods that
transmit push or pull. There is no interconnection except via the brake
cylinder. And the rod that comes out of the brake cylinder almost always
points toward the end with the brake wheel. The one exception I know of is the
Evan RBL (DPH/SSA).
