boB: I colour (pardon the Canadian spelling) my tree armatures with blended coats of Rustoleum "leather" and Krylon grey primer and camouflage colours. The rattle cans are pretty inexpensive if you get them at a large retail outlet, and last a long time when you're just doing light dustings. I also use cheap dollar store craft paints for touch up and accent work. Same with the ground foam. A large shaker bottle goes a long way. I've given up trying to make the foam stick to the trees with hair spray. I use Super 77 spray adhesive and it grabs the foam like crazy. The spray glue is fairly expensive but again, goes a long way.
For what it's worth, I think Jamie Bothwell has coerced me into doing a backdrop clinic at the Scranton NASG meet this summer. I've discovered that a backdrop showing detailed trees can reduce the need for an lot of 3-D trees up front.
