 Well for the first part I think what is different now is a lot of Boomers are 
downsizing their houses and won't be able to model in O scale yet they want 
something a bit larger than HO scale so S is the best option. Hint, Lionel and 
MTH both exploring the potential of S scale. 
 As to why the loss of Varney didn't bother HO too much just look at Athearn,in 
the 50's Uncle Irv revolutionized the model train industry with cheap mass 
produced products.If Athearn had decided to go with S scale instead of HO scale 
we wouldn't be having this discussion....DaveBranum
