I think most all the discussion on the matter of diodes is over. Mikey
did all of us a service in enumerating the advantages of diodes in
lighting circuits.
The fact that diodes do not current-share has been touched on.
One additional point is that if there are a large number of lamps being
powered thru diodes from one transformer, you may wish to put the diodes
in the hot side with abut half pointing (cathode band or bar end) toward
the lamp and the remainder in the other direction. This spreads the load
on the transformer over both halves of the current cycle and avoids having
all the lamp current flow during one half cycle only. The transformer
will operate a bit cooler.
