Normally one can do 2FA without a smartphone (it's true that an
SMS-only 2FA requires a phone, not necessarily smart). I wrote about

Git**b's 2FA systems are not SMS-only and therefore can be dealt with
without a  phone, smart or basic.

so it's really a purely political choice, whether to get a GitHub
account, no extra physical pieces of technology are needed. All GitHub
asks for is an email address.
