 But then if I revert it everything works fine again.  So I do *not* agree
 with it.

 If I revert *only* the change you made involving mkfrac and gdiv, then
 everything works fine.

 I'm posting a patch "trac_5520-rebase3.4.1.alpha0-part3.patch" that does
 *not* make the mkfrac change, and also has a comment about gotomat.   I
 have run the full test suite on all of sage with that patch applied and
 everything passes.
