All of Volker's changes look good to me. He added two aliases without
doctests, so I am adding those in so that it stays at 100% coverage. I
will submit a cumulative patch in a few minutes.
I am not adding the changes to #7820 this time to keep the two tickets
separate. I can rebase against it if it is merged first (quite likely
since I just gave it a positive review, so it should be in 4.3.2).
