Comment(by SimonKing):

 Hi John!

 I don't know how it works what you suggested. First of all, $INSTALLED has
 no value in the sage shell:
 {{{
 sage subshell$ echo $INSTALLED

 }}}

 Could it be that it is only defined inside {{{SAGE_ROOT/local/bin/sage-
 spkg}}}?

 And one problem with this method is that (if I understand correctly) one
 has to provide the exact version of the package whose existence is being
 tested.

 But I don't want a method to test for the presence of database_gap-4.4.12
 (so that it wouldn't work if database_gap-4.4.10 is installed). I want to
 test if ''any'' version of database_gap is there.

 And I think that this is exactly the purpose of the script
 {{{$SAGE_ROOT/spkg/standard/newest_version}}}.

 Cheers,

 Simon
