I think doing this in practice will be fraught with difficulty. The actual
files installed might even depend on platform. (For example, shared
libraries on HP-UX are .sl not .so). In general the files might depend on
the value of environment variables. I think it's just best to not try to
do that. I think it was a bad idea of mine, and one not worth revisiting.
