 I'm going to try using this later, but right now I want to ask whether `-a
 -e` is portable enough to satisfy drkirkby.  I know that one way of doing
 those is a "Gnuism" and the other one isn't.  It probably doesn't matter
 here, since we only do it on OS X, but still...
