on Dave's machine with sage-4.6.alpha2 I get:
{{{
sage: roots = eigvals(A)
sage: roots[0]
-1.7724538509055159
sage: roots[1]
1.7724538509055161
}}}
Note the different last digits, the positive root should print
{{{1.7724538509055159}}}.
On a Core 2 I get the same results as in comment 33.
