Paul's comments about the 53 or 64-bits has got me thinking.
I think gcc behaves differently with regards to SSE instructions on 32-bit
and 64-bit builds. I believe in some cases the FPU is used, but in others
the SSE instructions are used and I recall some comments saying the
default changed between 32-bit builds and 64-bit builds, though there are
compiler options one can use to override this in modern gccs.
However, why the absolute magnitude of the two roots differ is odd. The
two roots I got were:
