According to Rajendra Haldankar, station fire officer at Mapusa, it took 33 firemen and seven fire tenders from three fire stations of Mapusa and Panaji to extinguish the blaze within an hour. Haldankar, who led the fire fighting operations, told TOI that his department received a call around 9.25 am saying a fire had broken out in the compound of Kineco Private Limited which manufactures plastic fibre products at Pilerne industrial estate. A fire tender from Mapusa reached the site within 15 minutes but seeing the intensity of the fire and the dense, black smoke billowing from the yard, more fire tenders were called for from Mapusa and the fire force headquarters at Panaji. Haldankar said this was done to prevent the fire from spreading to other sheds in the vicinity. Investigations are on and the cause of the fire is still unknown, but Haldankar said 11 KV electrical cables were seen lying at the site. The company reportedly uses plastic fibre as raw material and the fire engulfed a huge heap of fibre waste accumulated in a corner of the compound. Along with the fibre waste, finished goods were also destroyed in the blaze including a hydrostatic tank worth about Rs 1 lakh, Haldankar said. Initially, the firemen used water to fight the fire but as it turned ineffective against the blazing plastic fibre, about 150 litres of foam were used to douse the flames, Haldankar said. No complaint of sabotage has been lodged and the Porvorim police have registered a case of fire accident. Porvorim police sources said the cause of fire has not been ascertained but the police recorded statements of the company staff. Officials of the electricity department also visited the site. -- FN * http://fredericknoronha.wordpress.com M +91-9822122436 P +91-832-2409490 http://twitter.com/fn On Facebook: http://www.new.facebook.com/people/Frederick-Noronha/502514643 "Human beings are the only creatures that allow their children to come back home." - Bill Cosby __________________________________________________________________ Ask a question on any topic and get answers from real people.
