Rico, lets be real, the tower was going to be set up in a communidade field
behind the Panchayatt. A safe enough distance from habitation. Some of the
arguments against the erection of the tower have been, "reduced yield from
coconut trees" ...."cancer from radiation", if there is any concrete proof or a
study by a reputable body with defined parameters, of links between tower
radiation beyond 40 meters or there abouts and cancer, then sure set the tower
as far away as possible. Even on the premise that there could be a remote link,
lets err on the side of caution and double the distance of the tower to
habitation, but don't object on some frivolous misguided speculation that has
no concrete proof to back it up. Coconut trees not yielding as argued at one of
the meetings is just not acceptable. Your own "wiki" link clearly states the
lack of any connection between the two. As a matter of fact there seem to
be more reliable studies linking
cancer to sustained cell phone usage and its continuous proximity to the
brain, so let those in fear of the towers also stop using their cellphones
while at it.
With the private owner offering up his property there can be no objections as
it is not communidade land and so does not need to get passed and approved by
anyone.
The lack of coverage in the village is just appalling.

I have not been involved in this debate, and frankly there would be
better-informed persons on both sides of the debate. But some of the
comments made on this list intrigued me:
Maurice: Is it a question of OWNERSHIP of the land where the tower is
being set up, or a question of its HAZARDOUS potential? If it's the
latter, then ownership of the land would not make a difference.
Ashley: We all use our mobiles, but what are the risks? Are you
basing you claims (about the lack of risks) on any specific
information? Could you share that with us?
Incidentally, the mobile-tower debate seems to be hotting up in India,
as we become the country with the fastest growing mobile phone base in
the world. Some issues:
Cell Tower Radiation (Hindi)

People who are living near mobile tower 400-500 metres should get
their houses tested for radiation.

Cell phone towers are bad for you. Here's why?

While I agree that an "oppose everything" policy doesn't make sense,
the onus is also on the BSNL to convince villagers about the safety of
their equipment. While we do need "development" (however vaguely that
term is often defined), let's keep safety matters in mind too, please!
