Dear Rico,

BSNL did come to Saligao to explain their position, most of us were too busy to
attend. All of the Consumer Cell members who were present went to the BSNL
office and sat through a detailed explanation as to why BSNL wanted a tower in
close proximity to their current office and not on the hills. They addressed
all of the queries and fears that the people had.

This whole debate becomes redundant because the tower is now on private
property, away from habitation.

With due respect news items, views and ongoing research hardly constitute
defense of a position. Unfortunately, I tend to steer more toward research and
studies conducted by legitimate independent or Govt. sponsored organizations in
the West, only because I know the legal ramifications of deceptive or bad
Business practices there. Malpractice or intentional mis-information are
devastating to whole Industries and Lawyers are constantly on the lookout for
opportunities to file Class Action Law suits on even a hint of impropriety.
This is a bigger deterrent in the West than here in India.

Dear Maurice, One way or another, I don't have strong views on this
issue. I don't want to belong to the
we-want-mobile-phones-but-not-mobile-towers lobby. At the same time,
it would be hypocritical to argue that
the-village-needs-mobile-towers-but-place-it-in-your-backyard.

As a general principle, I respect the views of people who adopt the
NIMBY (not in my backyard) approach. We need to respect their voices.
Would anyone of the votaries of the mobile-towers-for-Saligao plan be
eager to place one in their backyards, btw?

Which made me wonder... why is BSNL not willing to have a tower
someone along the uninhabited village hill? Is their argument that
"part of the village will not get coverage" really valid, or just an
excuse?

Btw, before we allow a few to shout down those raising questions, may
I point to a few online resources that might be of interest?

Cell towers, a health risk: ... Girish Kumar, professor of electrical
engineering at Mumbai IIT, said India's safe radiation limit for
mobile towers is also harmful. "We have allowed 4.5 Watt per sqm as
the safe limit. Russia has put a limit of 0.02 Watt and Germany 0.001
Watt," he said. "You know what 4.5 Watt means? It is same as putting
someone in a microwave for 19 minutes a day," Kumar said.

Cell Phone Transmitter Tower Dangers: Increased public awareness about
the link between prolonged proximity to cell phone transmitter towers
and certain kinds of diseases has led to spreading concern. Cell phone
towers emit a type of radiation that over time, seems to disrupt
normal cell activity in the body. In short amounts, this radiation may
be harmless, but people who live near cell phone towers may risk
excessive exposure.

Radiation levels of the non-nuclear kind in Delhi may have reached way
beyond what humans can live with. Almost four-fifths of the metropolis
has people living in the midst of radiation levels ranging from
“borderline” to “unsafe” and “extreme anomaly”, which are highly
unsafe. Only about a fifth of Delhi lives and works in the safe zone
and that is almost entirely where the vvips reside. The October
Commonwealth Games, over 12 days, could be the most radiation-filled
sports event ever.

The current drive against the illegal towers, Sen said, was also
partly prompted by public concerns over health. Some residents feared
towers beaming signals might pose health risks.
http://www.naturalhealthstrategies.com/india-targets-illegal-cell-phone-towers.html

Prof. Kumar's meter clearly indicates that as we get closer to the
cellphone towers, the radiation levels increase exponentially.
Radiation exposure up to minus 30 db a day is the safety limit for us.
But the meter reads -12 or -10 even at a distance of almost 50 meters
away from the towers.

STORM BREWING AGAINST MOBILE TOWERS: Are more phone base station
antennas (towers) a health hazard to the neighbourhood? Whatever the
claims and counter claims, erection of cellular towers in residential
localities, especially on high rise buildings, is facing rough
weather, so it seems. In Salcete, it started with protests from
residents of Navelim. Last week saw hundreds of students coming on the
roads in Cuncolim, protesting against the erection of a tower close to
the school building. On Aug 23, the residents of Maddel have come out
openly against the proposed construction of a tower in their
neighbourhood. (H)

Ultimately, those raising questions about the mobile towers could well
be wrong, scare-mongers and inaccurate. But the onus should be on BSNL
(and those supporting the idea of a tower) to convince villagers how
safe it is. Of course, we all love our mobile phones. But that is not
quite the point! FN
