Sanjeev, I couldn't agree more. Well said.... Rico, this has nothing whatsoever to do with class, education or middle class/elite perspectives and everything to do with wanton greed and a lack of accountability. Unfortunately, a few of our so called "respected elite" have now become so entwined in corruption themselves that they cannot stand up for what is right for the village any longer and cower down to everything that the Panchayatt says or does. Our Saligao Gaunkars need to be at the front of the battle to save the village because it is being traded and sold by greedy selfserving individuals who have absolutely no love for this village whatsoever and are only looking to line their own pockets. Saligao is easily divided on issues of religion, caste, bhatkar/munkar, the have's and have not's, and these unscrupulous individuals are exploiting these divisions while continuing to plunder, usurp and destroy this village. The Pilerne Forum who have been successful in stopping the Rape and Pillage of their Village have actually come to this village begging us to do something to save our village because they are aware of all of the "Plans" that are being pushed through. Apart from stopping all of the Commercial Projects that do not conform legally, they are forcing the Panchayat to act in setting up infrastructure prior to any further development. They are pushing for sustained development in their village. They have actually moved the High Court to review and revoke "migrant vote banks" that have been created in their Village and are in the process of challenging the Procedure for names being added to Electoral Rolls all over the State. We have the same problem here in our village and yet we sit back and allow for some of these corrupt individuals with migrant vote banks to come back and control the Panchayatt again and again. With our "New Sarpanch" we need to be more vigilant, more aware of everything being "Developed " around us. There is a small group of about 20 individuals who have dedicated their time, efforts and money in accumulating documentation on illegalities perpetrated by some of these scamsters. They need help to move forward and continue with this fight. RTI's, letters, follow up's all require time and effort in already full lives. I am going to go out on a limb and mention some of the individuals (who I know would rather stay anonymous and continue fighting) whose untiring help and support are slowly making a dent in slowing the rot, people like Mario Masc, Domnic Fernandes, Ashley Delaney, Dean and Alice, Sanjeev, Savio D'sousa, Deigo Fernandes, Arun Sawant, Keith, Ritu and a few others who shall remain nameless only cause of the repercussions that they may face, all doing their best to help try save what our fore fathers have left us. All united by one single fact "their love for Saligao and their willingness to fight to save it." We don't have very much time. We either act now or say goodbye to the village as we have known it... forever...!!!! Maurice

I probably eat and relish more street / junk food than you do. Might be an interesting journalistic rhetoric , but most people with their heads in the right place can see through this pseudo philanthropy - which is nothing but selling land illegally. Which in the first place is not even salable ! How come "development" in Salilgao only means changing land usage. Can you please list out "NON LAND BASED" developments done in our village by any panchayat ? I have personally handed out a list of activities to the MLA an panchayats that could take up activities NOT connected with change in land usage / usurping / selling land, but of course what is in it for "them" ? What about the safety aspects with the gaddos coming onto main roads ? have you noticed the traffic jams that are created due to vehicles parked in front of the gaddos ? How come the panchayat is sitting on the market redevelopment plans made years ago ? One can locate dozens of such stalls without jeopardizing traffic and disfiguring the landscape of Saligao. But - what is in it for "them" ? What about the garbage that these gaddos will generate ? Isn't the pile of rubble and growing row of tin sheds in front of your house a clear evidence of cancer that is growing ? Could we use the Saligao net for more than just "nice sounding words and articles" ? More vigilance, accountability , governance monitoring, calling - "spade a spade", making Saligao a better place for people to live in , children to grow up. More action and result oriented ? Rico , your involvement on the ground would complement the power on the net and help make a difference. Even the most educated can be corrupt. We should see such issues in terms of how effective and honest the "people's representatives" are in doing their work. In addition, the true test is whether the long-term interest of the village and her people are kept in mind. Of course, I also feel we should not see such issues purely from a middle-class/elite perspective. While some of us may not patronise roadside eateries, the issues of affordable nutrition and creating an earning potential in the village also need to be addressed. Just my thoughts.
