Whoa! Geez people lighten up on poor Zak!
I have been moving my company to SAPDB, MySQL & OSS from MS SQL, Access &
COTS software and will CONTINUE to do so. This announcement does NOTHING to
alter my plans and/or opinion of either product and look forward to what
fruits the collaboration will bring. Change is good but you must be open to
fresh ideas, look at everything logically and put aside the irrational
thoughts solely born of FUD.
Despite what some of you think, MySQL is an excellent database to date and
for those who rant about its lack of features please remember ... "Rome was
not built in a day". We should ALL be fall-down grateful that SAPDB & MySQL
exist, have given us excellent open products and WANT to continue giving us
those excellent cost effective alternatives. It simply comes down to MySQL
needed Enterprise class capabilities (but didn't want to start from scratch)
and SAP needed an exit strategy to unload the burden of SAPDB. Thank God SAP
just didn't cut-n-run like MOST PINHEADED EXECS would do and is going to
invest huge in the collaboration with MySQL.
Does the interface licensing (particularly plans for the SAPDB JDBC driver)
cause me a little concern? YES, but I have just sent an email in to see what
the current pricing terms are for the MySQL driver so my concerns should be
put to rest (or enflamed) soon.
Let's just look at this collaboration logically and participate with
feedback or whatever assistance we can provide to help guide this change in
a positive way because like it or not the change has happened and is going
to continue so get on the boat and stop whining!
Just my $0.02

safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
