My parents actually asked the same question of their vet. It is because of the nature of a dogs diet that they can eat the fruit (small controlled amounts) with no problems. As we all know, dog eat more than just meat (unlike cats). They safely eat rice, corn, beans, etc. The reason they like fruit is because it taste just as sweet to them as it does to us. My parent's Lab just LOVES oranges. She comes running and drooling whenever she smells orange anything. It's quite funny to see actually.
