If you search the internet there are several Torvalds's statements and 
videos about the reasons why he decided to write git and I think they 
are quite instructive (the difficulties in managing a large open source 
project like the Linux kernel: the need for any commits to be signed by 
at least two persons, patches that are in conflict with each other, etc.)
The fork & pull model of github is very interesting too.

Regarding scid there are no problems in managing the numerous code 
contributions :) and Alexander acted like the project maintainer.
I think that, at the moment, those who want to contribute should post a 
patch on the mailing list clearly describing the purpose of their code.
