Ideally, I'd like a function in addition to the class. And the more general class can use the function (as in my PR, to switch between Ward and complete linkage). Please do have a look at my PR to see how I am doing it. There is no reason to do it differently for single linkage than for the other linkage strategies (other than the optimal algorithm being different).
