Hi Folks, I have a strange problem with Sendmail and KDE on RedHat 7.2. I installed RH7.2 ontop of RH7.1 using the 'upgrade' system option of the installer and all went well for about a day and several reboots. Then on reboot the machine paused and hung on Starting Sendmail so I entered Interactive startup and bypassed sendmail and the machine booted OK. To stop the problem happening I stoped sendmail from starting on boot. Then I rebooted and started KDE and tried to bring up my ISDN link (ippp0) by using the KDE Applet (KisdnDock), which promptly crashed. Then KDE started to go crazy, windows where drawn incomplete and some app's including the Kterminal became unavailable. I thought thatthis may be due to the upgrade so reinstalled the system from scratch. All worked for about a day and then the same problem occured again - sendmail froze on boot and then KDE misbehaved in various ways making it unusable.
The system is still working with Gnome but some curious things are happening. My ISDN card was detected and installed as ippp0, but it does not always respond as ippp0 but sometimes as ippp1 and this happens without warning or rebooting, sendmail still freezes the boot sequence (it is now disabled). I would like sendmail working (or similair) for testing PHP and Perl app's locally. Has anyone any idea what is going on here? The only thing I can think of is that it is a bug in either RH7.2, Sendmail or KDE 2.1. I have re-installed the system several times but the errors always reoccur. I have another machine running RH7.2, KDE2.1 and all is fine except for the fact that sendmail does not work when using KMail (It reports 'Transport Unrecognised' when using /usr/sbin/sendmail as the transport, it is fine with my ISP's SMTP). Sendmail works fine from the CLI on this machine. The first machine mentioned is an AMD K2 500MHz and acts as firewall/router for my home LAN and the second is an Intel P4 chip. Can anyone shed any light on this problem? I would have thought that if it was a RH bug then it would have appeared on both machines and there has been no mention of such a bug in the usual forums or the RH website.
