the latter. I got some diagnostic programs with my motherboard, and we use mostly Compaqs at work which have diagnostic programs included with Bios setup so I've never had to track down any 3rd party ones. If its convenient I'd try re-seating the dimms (pushing them in a bit), CPU and any other non-soldered chips.
